Flywheel Generator: How It Works

The rotor, bearings, motor-generator, containment and power electronics behind flywheel systems.

Editorial standard: Seller performance claims are treated as claims unless independently substantiated. Electrical and high-speed rotating equipment can be hazardous.

Energy path

Input electricity or mechanical work accelerates a rotor. The rotor stores kinetic energy. A motor-generator later converts some of that stored energy back to electricity.

Main components

Practical systems can include a rotor, shaft, bearings, containment, motor-generator, controls and power electronics.

Why scale matters

Rotor mass, rotational speed, losses, material strength and conversion hardware determine what a system can actually do. A concept drawing alone does not establish household-scale performance.
