Mechanical generators

An alternator or generator converts mechanical input into electrical output. The mechanical input may come from an engine, turbine, wind rotor, pedal drive or another prime mover.

Storage is not generation

A flywheel can smooth or store mechanical energy, but it does not replace the need for an energy input.

Pick by purpose

An educational demonstrator, battery charger and household backup generator have very different output and safety requirements.
